Jackson’s 3rd Birthday Party: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Hosting a great party has always been one of my favorite things to do. For me, it’s an opportunity to fill my home with pretty things and present them to our friends and family in anticipation of celebrating something wonderful. When Jackson turned 3 years old last summer, I didn’t have to think twice about what kind of theme we would choose. Like most 3 year old boys, Jackson is fascinated with anything on wheels, so it was a no-brainer. The headliner was, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” but we definitely made sure we didn’t exclude emergency vehicles, including Jackson’s favorite vehicle, the big red Firetruck!
I gravitate towards anything vintage or rustic-inspired, so we actually already owned everything I used for the party spread. Since Jackson was born, I have always kept my eye out for antique cars and trucks whenever I’m at an antique store, so he now has a nice little collection. The Coca Cola delivery truck (pictured on the left) is one of my favorite finds. It’s actually a piggy bank! I borrowed some parts from Jackson’s Melissa and Doug train set to create the railroad track.
Cupcakes were from Cupcake Royale, our favorite Seattle-based cupcake bakery. I found the little cupcake toppers on Amazon.
This “parking garage” is actually a vintage 7-Up bottle crate I found at an antique shop. Jackson uses it on a daily basis for his toy cars, but it doubled as a cupcake stand for the party. The glass liter bottle holding car gummies is also an antique. I found the mini-gas stations on Amazon.
This fabulous airplane mobile is made by Authentic Models. I had to steal it from the playroom to feature it for this spread.
I found this little vintage dump truck at a local boutique for Jackson last year. I thought it would be perfect for this spread, filled with bags of lego brick candy!
Jackson loved his birthday spread, but what came later definitely stole the show… About an hour into the party, a giant firetruck pulled up to our house, fully equipped with 4 firefighters from the Seattle Fire Department! The look on Jackson’s face when he realized they had showed up for him is an image I will never forget. It was actually a surprise for me and my husband too; a good friend of ours had arranged for this special gift on her own! Jackson and his friends were given a personal tour of the firetruck and they bonded with real firemen. What more can a little boy ask for?
As you can imagine, this kind of birthday surprise is life-changing for a 3 year old. Hell, it even made my year! I’m not really sure we could ever top this party though. Hopefully he doesn’t expect a helicopter ride when he turns 4 this year.
